During the Battle of the Bulge, several U.S. divisions played critical roles in resisting the enemy offensive, despite being caught off guard by the surprise attack.

One of the most famous was the 101st Airborne Division, which held the strategic town of Bastogne. Encircled and outnumbered, they faced relentless enemy assaults, but refused to surrender. Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe’s defiant response of “Nuts!” to a German surrender demand became legendary. The division's resilience, along with the eventual relief by General Patton’s Third Army, turned Bastogne into a symbol of American determination.

The 28th Infantry Division, which was positioned in the Ardennes when the offensive began, bore the brunt of the initial enemy attack. Despite suffering heavy losses, their delaying actions provided valuable time for reinforcements to arrive. Similarly, the 99th Infantry Division fought fiercely at Elsenborn Ridge, where they managed to hold off enemy advances, preventing a breakthrough toward critical Allied supply lines.

Other key U.S. divisions included the 1st Infantry Division and the 2nd Armored Division, which were instrumental in counterattacking and closing the bulge created by the enemy offensive. These divisions, despite being severely outnumbered and enduring harsh winter conditions, played a crucial role in ultimately halting the German advance and turning the tide in favor of the Allies. Their courage and endurance in one of the war’s toughest battles exemplified the tenacity of American forces.

This display would make an extraordinary addition to any WWII or military collection.
