Based on the thick wooden panel, the style of the hand-carved double kovcheg, and the deep reverse grooves, the board itself safely dates back to the 17th century (or possibly earlier).The icon features multiple historical layers of paint. The visible top layer is a rustic, late 19th or early 20th-century folk-style overpainting. For an experienced art restorer or serious collector, this piece is an incredible find and a true "sleeper." Beneath these later layers of paint lies the potential to uncover the original 17th-century iconography.The icon measures approximately 27 x 31 cm (about 10.6 x 12.2 inches). The wooden panel is structurally solid, stable, and has acquired a magnificent, deep dark patina over the last 350+ years.
