Brief Description:

This is a very rare pair of late 17th-century Savona Italian Majolica Albarello Pharmacy Bottles.

Each wonderful piece is painted with a putto in a landscape setting, with one putto holding a tambourine, the other with a horn, above labels named for Sem: Agn: Cast: and for Sem: Ap :

Each with the original Savona shield mark to the base.

Note: The first bottle once contained agnus castus, namely the seeds (Seme), or a mixture made from the seeds, of the Chaste-tree (Vitex agnus castus). The second bottle may have contained seeds, or a mixture made from the seeds, of wild celery (Apium graveolens).

Condition:

Each of these drug bottles has several losses to the foot and rims; some minor pitting is present on the decorated bodies, but this does not detract from the overall appeal of the bottles, and no restorations are detected.
