Large western style knives are known as Bowie knives. This isn’t because of a blade shape or place of origin, it’s because of history’s most famous knife fighter, James Bowie. He carried a large fighting knife everywhere from the western plains all the way to the Alamo where he eventually died in a war against Mexico. He used a large blade is his legendary Sandbar fight and for a while carried what’s often known simply as the “Musso Bowie”, named after it’s assumed creator.
