Antique Yemenite Hebrew Manuscript Prayer Book Judaica Yemen 19th Century:
$349.99

An evocative original handwritten Jewish prayer manuscript from Yemen, containing a substantial collection of Hebrew liturgical and devotional texts written in the characteristic manuscript tradition of Yemenite Jewry.

The manuscript has no surviving title page, dated colophon, or other statement identifying its scribe, precise place of production, or date. It should therefore be approached as an undated Yemenite manuscript rather than assigned a date with unwarranted certainty.

On the basis of its script, paper, physical appearance and general manuscript tradition, a 19th-century date appears plausible, although it may be somewhat earlier or later.

THE MANUSCRIPT

The volume comprises a varied collection of prayers, piyyutim (liturgical poems), bakashot (supplicatory prayers), blessings and other devotional/liturgical material.

The text is written primarily in the distinctive Yemenite rabbinic or so-called “Rashi” manuscript script, with numerous prayers and sections introduced by dramatically enlarged Hebrew words and headings in square script.

Several different scribal hands appear to be represented, suggesting that the booklet may have been compiled, supplemented or used over a period of time rather than being the work of a single professional copyist completed at one sitting.

The numerous enlarged incipits, variations in script, corrections and additions give the manuscript considerable visual and historical character.

YEMENITE MANUSCRIPT CULTURE

This manuscript belongs to a particularly important tradition in Jewish book history.

While Hebrew printing had transformed Jewish book production throughout much of Europe and the Ottoman world centuries earlier, Jewish communities in Yemen continued to rely extensively upon handwritten religious books into the nineteenth century and even later.

Siddurim, tikhlalim, collections of piyyutim, bakashot, biblical texts and rabbinic works continued to be copied by hand for actual communal and personal use.

Consequently, Yemenite manuscripts preserve one of the last great continuous traditions of Hebrew manuscript book production.

This booklet is a particularly tangible example of that culture: it was clearly produced as a working religious book rather than a decorative manuscript, and its considerable signs of use testify to its practical devotional life.

SCRIPT AND SCRIBES

The manuscript is written predominantly in a characteristic Yemenite rabbinic (“Rashi”) book hand, rather than modern cursive Hebrew.

Large square Hebrew letters are employed for many headings and opening words, producing an attractive contrast with the densely written main text.

There appear to be multiple hands represented within the manuscript. Some sections differ noticeably in size, density and formation of the letters, while additions and corrections can also be seen.

These features are particularly interesting as evidence of the way such manuscripts could develop as living religious objects over time.

DATE

Probably Yemen, 19th century, although undated.

No attempt has been made to assign the manuscript to a specific year or decade because no dated colophon has been identified.

Yemenite scribal traditions remained highly conservative, and manuscripts continued to be produced by hand relatively late. Dating such a manuscript solely from handwriting can therefore be unreliable.

The 19th-century attribution should consequently be regarded as an informed approximate dating rather than a documented date.

CONDITION

The manuscript is bound in a later plain cloth binding, which is functional rather than decorative and is not the original binding.

The manuscript shows extensive evidence of age and genuine use, including staining and discoloration, handling and finger-soiling, edge wear, creasing, tears, chipped and defective margins, occasional losses affecting text, repairs and other age-related defects.

Some leaves are considerably more worn than others.

There are manuscript corrections, additions and variations in handwriting throughout.

The volume has not been collated against another manuscript or printed text, and because there is no original title page or colophon, completeness cannot be guaranteed.

The manuscript is offered exactly as shown.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description.

HISTORICAL INTEREST

A fascinating original artifact of Yemenite Jewish religious and manuscript culture, preserving the traditional handwritten transmission of Jewish liturgy in a community where manuscript production survived remarkably late.

Of particular interest to collectors of:

Yemenite Judaica • Hebrew manuscripts • Jewish liturgy • Siddurim and prayer books • Piyyutim • Bakashot • Sephardic and Mizrahi Judaica • Jewish manuscript culture • Yemenite Jewish history

Unlike a printed prayer book, every manuscript of this type is inherently individual: its particular combination of texts, scribal hands, corrections, additions and evidence of use reflects the religious environment in which it was created and used.

Original handwritten manuscript — not a printed book, facsimile or reproduction.

Yemen, probably 19th century.
