Original 1937 Shanghai Municipal Council Emergency Service Medal issued for service during the Battle of Shanghai and the emergency period surrounding the Shanghai International Settlement.
Obverse features the seal of the Shanghai Municipal Council. Reverse is inscribed:
“FOR SERVICES RENDERED
AUGUST 12
TO
NOVEMBER 12
1937”
These medals were awarded in connection with service to the Shanghai Municipal Council during the intense fighting in Shanghai in 1937, with recipients associated with organizations including the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, Shanghai Municipal Police, Fire Brigade and other municipal personnel.
Medal retains its period red, white, black and yellow ribbon. The ribbon shows substantial age-related fraying and separation as photographed. Medal exhibits attractive original patina, surface wear and areas of verdigris consistent with age.
An interesting and scarce piece of pre-WWII China / Shanghai International Settlement history.
