Extremely rare original French silvered-bronze commemorative plaquette relating to the 1937 Battle of Shanghai and the opening months of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Measuring approximately 8 × 5.5 cm and weighing a substantial 195 g, this is a particularly unusual surviving piece associated with the French presence in Shanghai during one of the most important battles fought in China before the Second World War.

The central helmeted female figure is Gallia, the allegorical personification of France and the French Republic, based upon a design by noted French sculptor and medallist Édouard Fraisse (1880–1945) work of the Maison Fraisse. Fraisse was an important French medallist and was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1929.

The inscription SHANGHAI 1937 refers to the Battle of Shanghai, fought between Chinese Nationalist forces under Chiang Kai-shek and the Imperial Japanese forces from August to November 1937.

Beginning with major fighting on 13 August, the battle developed into approximately three months of exceptionally intense urban warfare involving infantry, artillery, aircraft and naval forces. Some of China's best-equipped and German-trained divisions were committed to the battle. The eventual Chinese withdrawal opened the way toward Nanking and the next devastating stage of the Sino-Japanese War.

The battle was particularly remarkable because much of the fighting occurred immediately alongside Shanghai's foreign-controlled International Settlement and French Concession. French, British, American and other foreign residents were therefore extraordinarily close to a major modern battle while their concessions officially remained outside the principal combat zones.

Beneath the figure are three Chinese inscriptions, read from right to left: 求新 – Qiuxin; 董家渡 – Dongjiadu; and 南市 – Nanshi.

These identify the specific southern Shanghai area commemorated by the plaque. Dongjiadu was a Huangpu River waterfront district immediately south of the French Concession; Nanshi, also known to Westerners as Nantao, was the Chinese-administered southern city; and Qiuxin refers to the important Qiuxin engineering and shipbuilding works in the Dongjiadu area.

The plaque therefore commemorates not simply Shanghai generally, but the fighting around the Dongjiadu–Nanshi area bordering the French sphere.

The combination of Gallia, SHANGHAI 1937 and these Chinese place names indicate that the plaquette was produced as a French commemorative / souvenir piece for people connected with the French community and presence in Shanghai during the hostilities. Recipients or purchasers would have included French officials, military or naval personnel, police, businessmen and residents who experienced the fighting.

An identical example provides unusually strong evidence for the identification and rarity of this piece. French numismatic sale house iNumis offered one in December 2018 as “Chine / Japon, le conflit sino-japonais et la bataille de Shanghai, plaque, 1937.” The sale house classified it as “Rarissime” - extremely rare - with an estimate of €900. It opened at €500 and sold for €1,100. That particular example was also the specimen illustrated in Jean Lecompte's reference work.

The saleed example carried a privately engraved reverse reading “Souvenir des Hostilités Sino-Japonaises – Ton-ka-Du – Nantao,” meaning “Souvenir of the Sino-Japanese Hostilities – Dongjiadu – Nantao.” The present example has an essentially blank reverse, suggesting these plaques may originally have been supplied with space for individual engraving or presentation, although the precise reason for the difference cannot be established.

Mesurant environ 8 × 5,5 cm et pesant 195 g, il s’agit d’une pièce particulièrement inhabituelle ayant survécu de la présence française à Shanghai durant l’une des plus importantes batailles livrées en Chine avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

La figure féminine casquée au centre représente Gallia, personnification allégorique de la France et de la République française, d’après une création du célèbre sculpteur et médailleur français Édouard Fraisse (1880–1945), de la Maison Fraisse. Fraisse fut un important médailleur français et fut nommé Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur en 1929.

L’inscription SHANGHAI 1937 fait référence à la bataille de Shanghai, qui opposa les forces nationalistes chinoises de Tchang Kaï-chek aux forces impériales japonaises d’août à novembre 1937.

Après le début des combats majeurs le 13 août, la bataille se transforma en près de trois mois de guerre urbaine d’une exceptionnelle intensité, impliquant infanterie, artillerie, aviation et forces navales. Certaines des divisions chinoises les mieux équipées et entraînées par les Allemands furent engagées dans les combats. Le retrait final des forces chinoises ouvrit la voie vers Nankin et vers la phase suivante, particulièrement dévastatrice, de la guerre sino-japonaise.

Cette bataille fut également remarquable par le fait qu’une grande partie des combats se déroula immédiatement à proximité de la Concession française et de la Concession internationale de Shanghai, administrées par les puissances étrangères. Les résidents français, britanniques, américains et d’autres nationalités se trouvèrent ainsi à proximité immédiate d’une grande bataille moderne, alors que les concessions étrangères demeuraient officiellement en dehors des principales zones de combat.

Sous la figure apparaissent trois inscriptions chinoises, qui se lisent de droite à gauche : 求新 – Qiuxin ; 董家渡 – Dongjiadu ; et 南市 – Nanshi.

Ces inscriptions identifient précisément la zone du sud de Shanghai commémorée par la plaquette. Dongjiadu était un quartier situé sur les rives du Huangpu, immédiatement au sud de la Concession française ; Nanshi, également connu des Occidentaux sous le nom de Nantao, constituait la partie méridionale de la ville administrée par les Chinois ; Qiuxin fait référence aux importants ateliers de construction mécanique et navale Qiuxin situés dans le secteur de Dongjiadu.

La plaquette ne commémore donc pas simplement « Shanghai » en général, mais plus précisément les combats dans le secteur de Dongjiadu–Nanshi, à la limite de la zone d’influence française.

La combinaison de Gallia, de l’inscription SHANGHAI 1937 et de ces noms de lieux chinois indique que cette plaquette fut produite comme objet commémoratif / souvenir français destiné aux personnes liées à la communauté et à la présence françaises à Shanghai durant les hostilités. Parmi les destinataires ou acheteurs figuraient vraisemblablement des fonctionnaires français, des militaires ou marins, des policiers, des hommes d’affaires et des résidents ayant vécu les combats.

Un exemplaire identique fournit des éléments particulièrement solides permettant de confirmer l’identification et la rareté de cette pièce. La maison française de ventes numismatiques iNumis en proposa un exemplaire en décembre 2018 sous la description : « Chine / Japon, le conflit sino-japonais et la bataille de Shanghai, plaque, 1937 ». La maison de ventes le qualifia de « Rarissime », avec une estimation de 900 €. Mis à prix à 500 €, il fut finalement adjugé 1 100 €. Cet exemplaire était également celui illustré dans l’ouvrage de référence de Jean Lecompte.

L’exemplaire vendu aux enchères portait au revers une gravure privée : « SOUVENIR DES HOSTILITÉS SINO-JAPONAISES – TON-KA-DU – NANTAO ». Le présent exemplaire possède un revers essentiellement vierge, ce qui suggère que ces plaquettes pouvaient à l’origine être fournies avec un espace destiné à une gravure individuelle ou à une dédicace de présentation, bien que la raison exacte de cette différence ne puisse être établie avec certitude.
