The second cropped photo is simply to show what it would look like if it was matted. This is an original chromolithograph caricature from the British satirical magazine Vanity Fair, published in London on June 26, 1869, as part of the "Statesmen" series (No. 21). Drawn by Italian artist Carlo Pellegrini (1839-1889, using pseudonym "Ape"), it depicts Edward Henry Stanley, Lord Stanley (1826-1893), who later became the 15th Earl of Derby upon his father's death in October 1869. Born in London, Stanley was educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge, entering politics as MP for King's Lynn (1848-1869) in the House of Commons, Westminster. He served as Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1852), Colonial Secretary (1858-1859), and briefly as Foreign Secretary (1866-1868) under his father, the 14th Earl of Derby (three-time Prime Minister). In the late 1860s, amid Disraeli's Conservative government and the Second Reform Act (1867) debates in Parliament, Stanley was known for his moderate conservatism and diplomatic roles, later becoming Foreign Secretary again (1874-1878) and representing Britain at the Congress of Berlin (1878) to resolve the Eastern Question. The caption "He speaks with one party and acts with the other" satirizes his perceived political inconsistencies during a time of party realignments in Victorian Britain. The artwork shows Stanley in profile, wearing a top hat and overcoat, holding a cane, with a coronet icon denoting nobility, against a pale background—emblematic of Vanity Fair's humorous portraits of 19th-century elites.Size: approximately 8.5" x 13.75".
