Fun Facts: Westland Center opened in 1965 and was one of the first enclosed shopping malls in the United States. At the time of this postcard's production, the area was still known as Nankin Township before incorporating as the city of Westland in 1966. The interior design featured two main courtyards and seven arcades designed to allow shoppers to move through the entire center in air-conditioned comfort. This view of the West Court highlights the mid-century aesthetic with lush indoor plantings and sculptures that were hallmarks of early mall architecture. Visible storefronts in this view include a Kresge five-and-dime and Raimi's, reflecting the major retail tenants of the era.
