WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1 (September 1972) — the first issue of Jack Russell’s own ongoing title, and the book that launched Marvel’s Bronze Age horror line.
Marvel could not publish werewolves at all until the Comics Code loosened in 1971. Werewolf by Night was one of the first books through that door, and its success opened the way for Tomb of Dracula, Ghost Rider and the rest of the horror line. Mike Ploog’s art on this issue is the run’s signature: scratchy, atmospheric, and unlike anything else Marvel was printing. Gerry Conway scripted, Roy Thomas edited. The story is “Eye of the Beholder!”

Both claims get made about this book constantly and neither is true. This listing is not making them.

•Multiple spine stress ticks that break colouralong the spine edge, four to five clearly visible. On a red cover these show as white breaks and they are the most visible defect on the book. Images 4 and 5.
•Moderate cover surface creasing and rippling, visible under raking light at image 2 and not visible straight on.
•Top-left corner lightly blunted.
•Tanning on the interior pages.Normal for 1972 newsprint.
What is sound.Front cover colour is bright and strong, with the red still vivid. The corners at top-right and bottom-right aresharp. Theback cover is clean and bright with the white still white, which on a 1972 book is uncommon and is a real indicator of how this copy was stored. The page block is tight and square, the centrefold is attached, and the book is complete. No tears, no missing pieces, no coupons cut, no tape, no restoration, no writing, no stamps, no pressing.
