A vintage WWII New Zealand military sweetheart brooch, believed to date from the Second World War.The brooch is based on the NZ Onward general service insignia used by the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, with a separately applied gold toned NZ Onward badge surrounded by a darkened sterling silver wreath.The central insignia features the letters NZ within a fern wreath, surmounted by a King\'s Crown and with the motto ONWARD below.The reverse is stamped STERLING SILVER.The original brooch pin has broken away and is no longer present. The hinge and catch fittings remain attached to the reverse.The Onward insignia was used by New Zealand forces during both World Wars and was adopted as the general service badge of the 2NZEF during WWII. Sweetheart versions were privately produced as jewellery for relatives and loved ones of serving personnel.
