Original WWII-era black-and-white photograph showing noted U.S. Army Air Forces fighter ace Colonel David C. Schilling seated in the cockpit of a P-47 Thunderbolt with victory markings visible on the aircraft.
The photograph bears a handwritten personal inscription and “Col. Dave Schilling” signature in the upper-right corner. The inscription appears to read in part: “To a grand guy who has done the most to put them in the air…” Please examine the close-up photographs and judge the handwriting for yourself.
The photograph is mounted on its original wooden display board. Pencil measurements are written on the mount. This piece was found with a related collection of WWII aviation photographs and memorabilia connected to Cass S. Hough, Col. Benjamin Kelsey, Bovingdon Aerodrome, P-38 aircraft and P-47 Thunderbolt testing.
Condition: Vintage condition with age-related toning, foxing, discoloration and staining around the photograph’s edges. The wooden mounting board shows scratches, edge wear and small losses. The photograph remains visually strong with good contrast. Please review all photographs carefully for the exact condition.
