Beautiful Vintage Smithsonian Collection Replica “Brides” Album Quilt commissioned by American Pacific Enterprises~Limited Edition. This gorgeous cotton quilt is a limited edition replica of the “Brides” quilt made in 1991 from the Smithsonian Collection. The original masterpiece was finished in 1851 by Eliza Jane Baile and showcases Baile's significant talent as an artist. She used original patterns featuring wreaths of strawberries and flowers. The quilt was passed down through generations. In 1954, her youngest daughter, Addie Manahan donated her mother's masterpiece to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
This Brides Quilt replica from the Smithsonian Collection is a fascinating piece, not just for its design, but for the historical "quilt war" it sparked in the early 1990s. In 1991–1992, the Smithsonian licensed American Pacific Enterprises to produce a limited run of four quilts from their collection. The Brides quilt was one of them, alongside the Harriet Powers "Bible Quilt," the "Great Seal Quilt," and the "Sunburst Quilt." They used American-sourced fabrics for the handmade applique and quilt work and the assembly was done overseas, typically involving about 50 or more hours of labor per quilt. The quilt measures 88" X 90" and is in excellent condition. It has no holes or frays and no stains. The back is white, the hand stitched binding is solid red, and the batting is white cotton.
