Vintage Bartholomew’s Revised Half-Inch Contoured Map of Perthshire, Scotland, Great Britain Sheet 48, dating to approximately 1953.
Published by John Bartholomew & Son Ltd at the Edinburgh Geographical Institute, this beautiful large folding map covers a substantial part of the Scottish Highlands and Perthshire, including Loch Tay, Loch Rannoch, Loch Earn, Killin, Aberfeldy, Crieff, Comrie, Ben Lawers and surrounding mountain country.
Printed at a scale of approximately 1:126,720 — half an inch to one mile, the map uses Bartholomew’s wonderfully distinctive layer colouring to show elevation, with vivid blue lochs contrasting against greens, browns and pale mountain summits.
This is the cloth-backed folding edition, originally priced at 5 shillings, and retains its original bright blue Bartholomew’s card covers. The reverse cover carries the index to the complete Bartholomew’s Revised Half-Inch Great Britain series.
The map appears to date from the early-to-mid 1950s, approximately c.1953. No definite printed publication date has been identified on this copy, so the date should be regarded as approximate.
A lovely original piece of mid-century Scottish cartography, particularly appealing to collectors, walkers and anyone with connections to Perthshire or the Scottish Highlands.
