Vintage Armin Hanik Ancient Kauri Bowl with Pāua Shell Inlay
Signed hand-turned decorative bowl by Armin Hanik of The Flying Cow Fine Woodcraft, Kerikeri, New Zealand. Turned from ancient kauri and dated XI \'02, November 2002. Inscribed by the maker as “NZ Ancient Kauri, 30–50,000 years old.”Black resin channel encircling the rim is inlaid with iridescent pāua fragments and the small chambered internal shells of ram’s-horn squid.(most likely)
Medium golden color and strongly figured grain without applied stain, finished only with a light coat of wax. Approximately 285 mm or 11¼ inches across and 80 mm or 3⅛ inches high.
Hanik worked from Waipapa Road near Kerikeri, a Bay of Islands town in New Zealand’s Northland kauri region known for its community of independent artists and craftspeople. If you are shipping this bowl back toKerikeri I may just ship myself with the bowl.
Condition
- Very nice display-kept condition, no concentrated interior wear, it hasn\'t been used as a catch-all bowl though it would work nicely for that.
- A few very small nick marks and minor natural irregularities occur where the grain changes direction.
- Black resin band shows light concentric finishing and polishing marks under close examination.
- The pāua and ram’s-horn squid shell inclusions remain securely embedded.
- No repairs or restoration observed. The wood has been lightly waxed and has not been stained.
