MPN: Detroit Coil Company induction or spark coil mounted on a finished wooden base. This early-to-mid 20th-century electrical apparatus is based on the Ruhmkorff induction-coil design, which used an interrupter to convert low-voltage direct current into high-voltage pulses.The apparatus features concentric primary and secondary coil assemblies, multiple brass binding-post terminals, an adjustable mechanical interrupter/contact assembly, exposed copper wiring, and a long metal guide rail. The orange inner coil extends from the larger fabric-covered outer winding.
Removing the wooden bottom panel reveals the original internal wiring and a paper capacitor marked 0.15 MFD and 400 VDC. The underside of the panel is stamped “Detroit Coil Co., Detroit, Mich.” An additional impressed marking appears to read “510A C,” although its exact significance is unknown.
Detroit Coil Company became known for producing spark coils during the early development of Detroit’s automotive industry. This larger open-form example may have been intended for electrical experimentation, demonstration, testing, or specialized ignition use.

Condition
Vintage pre-owned condition with scratches, scuffs, dust, finish wear, discoloration, oxidation, and tarnishing consistent with age and former use. The wooden base has areas of surface wear, particularly around its edges and underside.
Several fine wires and copper leads appear loose, exposed, broken, or disconnected. The internal capacitor and wiring are old and should not be assumed safe or operational. The coil has not been electrically tested, and no attempt was made to produce a spark.
