VF-21 FREELANCERS SQUADRON PATCH SET - F-14A Tomcats - Operation Southern Watch Iraq - USS Indy 200 Centurion 1992-1995
This is a New Set of Squadron Issued VF-21 Freelancers F-14A Tomcat Patches. Included is a very rare VF-21 1982 Operation Southern Watch Cruise Patch with the cool phrase, "IT FLIES IT DIES." Also included, is a very rare USS Indy CV-62 200 Centurion Patch for the pilot's 200 carrier landings on the USS Indy. It would take you years to collect all these patches for this Tomcat Squadron. VF-21 changed to the USS Indianapolis CV-62 in 1990 and was stationed in port at Yakasuka, Japan with VF-21 stationed at Atsugi Naval Air Base. In August of 1990 VF-21 Freelancers was part of the initial force on Station with the USS Indy CV-62 in the Persian Gulf during Desert Sheild, when Saddam Hussein & Iraq invaded Kuwait. The USS Ranger relieved the USS Indy and in September 1990 it cruised back to port in Japan and VF-21 returned to Asagi Naval Air Base. From April 1991 to October 1991 VF-21 on the USS Indianapolis was part of the initial Operation Southern Watch. They flew CAP Missions and engaged Iraqi Jets that violated the 32nd Parallel "No Fly Zone" in Southern Iraq after Desert Storm. In 1993 and in 1995 VF-21 on the USS Indy took part in 2 more Operation Southern Watch. In 1993 on the way to the Persian Gulf, VF-21 bombed terrorist sites in Somalia. In 1995 after returning to Atsugi Naval Air Base, VF-21 was disestablished on January 31, 1996. The Photo is a section of VF-21 Freelancers Tomcats flying a CAP Mission during Operation Southern Watch in Iraq in 1992.
