This striking triptych captures a scene from the classic historical play Imoseyama Onna Teikin, known for its intricate romance and tragic themes. The design features characters associated with the famous "Michiyuki" (travel scene) and the tale of Omiwa, a humble townswoman deeply in love with the noble Motome (disguised as Yuzame).
Set against a bold, vivid blue background (Berlin blue) beneath blooming cherry blossoms, the characters are dramatically posed holding spools of thread (odamaki), a key symbol in the narrative used to trace a lover's footsteps. The print highlights the expressive portraiture for which Kunichika was renowned, showcasing prominent Meiji actors including Nakamura Shikan as Omiwa (center) and Bando Hikosaburo as Genshichi (right).
