Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, a world renowned ichthyologist, explorer, author and publisher, spent more than 40 years exploring the jungles of the world, discovering tropical fish for hobbyists worldwide. He discovered more than 560 new species of fish (including the cardinal tetra seen in this photograph), with numerous finds named in his honor. Dr. Axelrod has also authored hundreds of books, which have been translated into every major modern language and have sold more than 100 million copies, and he founded "Tropical Fish Hobbyist", the most widely read tropical fish monthly magazine in the world. To celebrate his love of music, Dr. Axelrod wrote and published dozens of authoritative works on the subject. His accomplishments have been recognized with major awards and honors bestowed by countless universities, professional and scientific societies, industry and trade groups and the international media. Dr. Axelrod has been a hero of mine for many years. unfortunately, there have been many unkind things said about him after his passing. All I can add is that without Dr. Axelrod, there would be NO tropical Fish hobby. He was a fine man and very kind me when I was just a young man starting out in the world.
