About Shimenawa & Shide (Important Cultural Information)

Shimenawa are traditional Shinto sacred ropes displayed at the entrance of homes, shrines, or spaces to welcome the New Year and to mark a purified area.
They are traditionally used for one year and replaced annually.

The included shide are intentionally made of paper, not fabric.
In Shinto belief, paper is used because it symbolically absorbs impurity and negative energy.
Fabric shide that are washed or reused would be considered ritually inappropriate.

To attach the shide, simply fold them and gently tie or insert them between the twists of the rope.
No tools or adhesives are required.

Handcrafted & Natural Materials

This shimenawa is handmade by experienced Japanese shimenawa craftsmen using natural sedge grass.
Because natural materials are used:

• Some shedding of fine straw fibers may occur, especially when first unpacked

• Size, color, and texture may vary slightly from piece to piece

These characteristics are normal and part of the authenticity of traditional handcrafted items.

Please Note

• This is a traditional household shimenawa, not a ceremonial rope worn by sumo wrestlers.
  (Yokozuna ropes are fully custom-made, surface-treated ceremonial items in a completely different category and price range.)

• Photos show the actual style and condition prior to shipment. Each item is inspected before dispatch.
