Introduction,
This short history of the work on gas turbines at theR;A.E, has been prepared in the hope that it will
be of particular interest to the AeronauticalResearch committee at whose meetings, from 1920onwards, the prospects of the turbine have been discussed
The failures of early gas turbine schemeswere due to lack of satisfactory heat resistingmaterials and poor efficiencies of the components. Although our interest provided a stimulus for thedevelopment of suitable materials, our research was ‘mainly devoted to the aerodynamic problems. Theexamples used to illustrate this narrative are takenmainly from our experimental rather than fromtheoretical work. Some of these experiments were doneby collaborating firms under Air Ministry contracts,the work by \'Messrs Metropolitan Vickers‘Ltd., beinga notable example.
