Original land grant issued June 1, 1859 to John A. Chitwood for 40 acres located in Springfield, Barry County, Missouri. Signed by presidential secretary and co-signed by the Recorder of the General Land Office. John A. Chitwood first appears in Missouri in the 1850 US Census and later appears to have moved to Texas and served in the Civil War in the 18th TX Cavalry. He died in Oklahoma in 1894 at the age of 61.
