OJUELOS FRACTAL CONTACT MASK — HUMAN & NON-HUMAN COMMUNICATION ICONOGRAPHY
This is one of the more visually complex and symbolically layered pieces associated with the greater Ojuelos de Jalisco artifact mystery.
The front presents a large elongated alien-like mask with classic Ojuelos characteristics: almond-shaped eyes, extended facial structure, pale stone-like material, reddish mineral staining, dark engraved lines, and layered iconography.
What immediately stands out is the fractalized face structure across the upper portion of the mask. The imagery appears to split, overlap, and transform into multiple facial forms. It creates the impression of one identity opening into another, almost like a visual representation of multidimensional perception, consciousness, transformation, or contact between different forms of intelligence.
Directly above the main face, positioned in the forehead or “third-eye” area, is a separate cartouche-like framed scene. Inside this enclosure appears a more human figure. Its placement is especially significant because it creates a direct relationship between the human figure and the larger alien-like face beneath it.
One possible interpretation is that this forehead region represents a portal, interface, vision center, or communication point. Across many spiritual traditions, the third-eye area is associated with expanded perception. Here, another being is literally depicted within that location, almost as though the larger mask is receiving, viewing, carrying, or communicating with the human figure through the forehead center.
The reverse side continues the story.
On the back is a highly detailed human or human-like ceremonial figure. The figure appears barefoot, dressed in elaborate shamanic or royal-style clothing, and wearing a pronounced ceremonial headdress. The barefoot detail may suggest grounding, ritual purity, direct connection with the earth, humility, or ceremonial presence.
Most importantly, the facial style and elaborate headdress appear to reflect the same human-like figure shown inside the framed forehead scene on the front.
This creates a compelling visual sequence:
FRONT: elongated alien-like mask
FOREHEAD / THIRD EYE: human figure inside a framed portal-like scene
BACK: the human or shamanic figure shown in full ceremonial form
When the artifact is viewed as a complete object, one possible interpretation is that it depicts human and non-human communication. The alien-like being may represent one side of the interaction, while the ceremonial human on the reverse represents the other. The forehead scene appears to act as the visual bridge between them.
That continuity is what makes this piece so powerful.

The reverse shows the human participant in ceremony.
