The legends are true about the Northmen Guild. The word perfection doesn\'t begin to describe their skill. The moment you pick this axe up for the first time, you will notice that the weight feels buoyant. The nuances of the handle are in perfect balance. To move your dominate hand up the handle and notice not a single burr. The knowing that this handle was soaked in a traditional tung oil bath for a whole day.Every detail is created by human hands. The forge weld head is made in the traditional way by inserting a small piece of exceptionally high quality high-carbon steel in between a softer steel. This mild low carbon steel that makes up the main bulk of the head, has a high tensile strength and actually makes an axe made in this way more durable than a modern mono steel axe. The bit is made from Bohler K460, a high-carbon steel made to the highest standards in Sweden (one of the birth places of metallurgy). The handle is red elm, a species renowned for its durability as it is nearly impossible to split. This type of wood can also be used in colder temperatures than hickory, due to its native range in Latvia.

If you are unfamiliar with the Northmen Guild, then check out their website and YouTube. They produce films equally as skillful as their tools. These craftsmen and craftswomen represent the masters of their individual craft. Everything is made by hand, they have a code that states: Hands, Not Machines. How this translates to this American Felling Axe is that each component is made by a different master: axe head, handle, and leather sheath. This is a real tool meant for serious work. I am selling this axe as like-new. I have owned this axe for a year and used it last year to procure my family\'s firewood in Interior Alaska. It is a beast for felling. Like a laser that sinks deep into the wood even with its fat-high-centerline. Despite some heavy use, this axe is in perfect condition, scary sharp and ready to be passed down to your grandchildren.

Although the Northmen don\'t explicitly identify the inspiration for this axe, through my own extensive research, I believe this head is modeled after a Jersey Pattern. It has the low sweeping heel and just sheer massive cheeks. This axe can used for any task a woodsmen encounters:felling, limbing, bucking, and splitting. If you want only one axe that can do it all. The high center line on the cheeks allow for better release in wood, especially dense hardwoods like oak or hickory.Probably my favorite part of this axe, even more than the exquisitely figured handle, are the patterned hammer marks on the axe head. This is the proof and signature that this tool was made by hand.

Since updating their product line a couple years ago, the Northmen made this particular model of the American Felling Axe no longer available. Their current model is a mono steel and has a slightly decreased weight.

The price reflects the cost to ship such a long tool from Latvia.
