NASA Dryden Don McCormick Flight Suit CWU-36/P DC-8 Airborne Science 3pc Lot:
$1499.00

Offered here is a three-piece vintage NASA flight clothing collection associated with NASA Dryden Flight Research Center / Airborne Science operations, including a named flight suit for Don McCormick, a documented NASA Dryden airborne-science flight engineer.

This is an unusual grouping of actual flight apparel with period NASA, Dryden, Airborne Science and DC-8 flight-crew insignia. The pieces show genuine age, use and wear and are being sold together as found.

INCLUDED IN THIS LOT:

1. Blue NASA Don McCormick Flight Suit

Vintage blue one-piece flight suit manufactured by Flight Apparel, Inc., Hammonton, New Jersey.

The suit retains an impressive group of embroidered insignia including:

Large NASA “meatball” insignia

DON McCORMICK NASA winged flight-crew name patch

Flight Missions Branch – NASA OMF – Airborne Science shoulder patch

U.S. flag patch

Numerous zippered flight pockets and leg openings

This is the centerpiece of the collection because Don McCormick can be independently documented through NASA records.

NASA\'s X-Press publication identified Don McCormick as a former flight engineer on airborne-science aircraft at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. His aviation career also included eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a C-130 flight engineer and work at NASA Ames as a flight engineer aboard the C-141 Kuiper Airborne Observatory.

2. Blue NASA Flight Jacket

Blue flight jacket manufactured by Flight Suits Ltd., El Cajon, California, size approximately 48, with DuPont Nomex IIIA labeling.

Features include:

Embroidered NASA insignia

U.S. flag shoulder patch

Velcro identification/patch areas

Black knit collar, cuffs and waistband

Multiple flight-style pockets

The jacket shows age and operational-type wear, including fading/discoloration and general signs of use. Please examine photographs carefully.

3. NASA Dryden DC-8 Airborne Science CWU-36/P Flight Jacket

Vintage sage/gray CWU-36/P Flyers\' Jacket, tagged X-Large (46–48) and manufactured from flame-resistant aromatic polyamide material.

This jacket carries particularly interesting NASA aviation insignia:

Dryden Flight Research Center – Airborne Science patch

DC-8 Flight Crew patch

U.S. flag shoulder patch

Velcro name/identification area

NASA\'s highly modified DC-8 served as a flying science laboratory and was operated through NASA\'s Airborne Science program. NASA records document the DC-8\'s long association with Dryden Flight Research Center, including worldwide scientific data-gathering missions flown by Dryden crews.

DON McCORMICK / NASA CONNECTION

The named flight suit is particularly significant because Don McCormick was an actual NASA Dryden airborne-science flight engineer, rather than an astronaut or celebrity name added to a reproduction garment.

The combination of his personalized NASA flight-crew patch, Flight Missions Branch/Airborne Science insignia and the related Dryden/DC-8 material makes this a very interesting collection representing the less commonly encountered airborne research and flight-operations side of NASA history.

NASA Dryden Flight Research Center was renamed NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center in 2014.

Airborne Science Program

The NASA DC-8 was a heavily modified four-engine aircraft used as an airborne laboratory for Earth and atmospheric science. NASA states that the aircraft could carry researchers, flight crew and as much as 30,000 pounds of scientific equipment.

CONDITION

All three pieces are vintage, used garments and are being sold AS-IS.

The blue garments show normal age, fading, discoloration and general wear.

The gray CWU-36/P is considerably more heavily worn. It has staining/paint marks, fading, abrasions, fabric wear, damaged/torn areas and other signs of extensive use, particularly around the sleeves/underarm areas. Knit portions also show age and wear.

Nothing has been professionally cleaned or restored.

Please carefully review ALL photographs. The photographs are an important part of the condition description and show exactly what is included.

No representation is being made that every patch has remained in its present position since the garments were originally manufactured. The Don McCormick identification and NASA career information are supported by NASA historical documentation; the garments themselves are offered based upon their markings, patches and the provenance under which the grouping was acquired.

These would make an excellent addition to a collection of NASA memorabilia, Dryden/Armstrong Flight Research Center history, NASA Airborne Science, experimental aviation, DC-8 aviation history or vintage flight equipment.

All three garments are being sold together as one collection.
