The Metropolitan Cross-Town Railway operated one of Manhattan’s early streetcar lines connecting ferry terminals across the city. The line ran across lower Manhattan linking the Hudson River ferries with the East River ferries and was part of the rapid expansion of surface transit in New York during the late 19th century. The railway was later absorbed into the larger Metropolitan Street Railway system during the consolidation of New York’s street railroads.
Notable Signature – Peter A.B. Widener
This bond bears the signature of Peter Arrell Browne Widener (1834–1915), one of the most powerful transit financiers of the Gilded Age. Widener helped build major street railway systems in Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York and was a key organizer behind the consolidation of Manhattan’s streetcar companies. He later became involved in founding major corporations such as U.S. Steel and American Tobacco and was considered one of the wealthiest Americans of his era.
His family later became connected to the RMS Titanic sinking through his son George Widener.
Condition: I am not a professional and this comes from my father’s collection of antique stocks and bonds. Given its age, it shows age related toning, foxing, edge wear and folds, raised corporate seal, 24 attached coupons and printed by International Bank Note Co. NY.
