Malcolm Sutherland Mackay was born on September 5, 1881, in Englewood, New Jersey, the son of Jennie Elizabeth Wise and Donald Mackay. Although Malcolm's dad did not attend college, he became a leading New York financier and at one time was president of the New York Stock Exchange. He did not think a college education was necessary for success and encouraged his son to learn by practical experience. By the time he was a teenager, Malcolm was working as a runner for his father's firm for a salary of $25 a month. He spent his vacations bird hunting in Nebraska and North Dakota and thus began his romance with the West, "filled only with the desire to see the great cattle country, to get into the cattle business, and to become a rider of the boundless plains."
In 1899 while in Mandan, ND he was encouraged to go to Red Lodge, Montana, for some big game hunting. Two years later, armed with a letter of introduction to Charley Wright, who ran cattle on property between the East and West Rosebud creeks 25 miles northwest of Red Lodge, Malcolm found the country he would love. Malcolm later purchased Charley Wright's ranch and in subsequent years bought up surrounding homesteads, amassing property that became the Lazy E L Ranch. He spent the next 20 years dividing his time between the ranch and Wall Street, where he was a senior partner of a Manhattan brokerage firm.
The signature also includes the handwritten location and date, “Tenafly, NJ 1925”.
