- I have owned this carving for 50 years. It is a very rare Mah Meri carving from the 1970's, created by the elder Master Carver Pion Anak Bumbong (1947-2014) from the Mah Meri Orang Asli community on Carey Island, Selangor, Malaysia. It is titled "Moyang Tenong Jerat Harimau". An exceptionally rare, museum-grade masterpiece with cultural significance and is marked AR / PM. That is the single most important factor driving its historical value. It elevates the carving from a beautiful craft piece to a highly valued, institutional grade historical artifact. The presence of the AR / PM mark establishes the fact it is from the Golden Era, pre commercial, pre tourism. This AR / PM marking on the base provide critical evidence of its historic pedigree confirming it was vetted during the early era of Orang Asli art. AR stands for Anthony Ratos, the legendary patron and ethnographer who cataloged these works. The PM corresponds to Pulau Carey / Mah Meri, and means this carving was registered under the Pejabat Orang Asli Museum System. There is also a black stamp on the bottom Genuine Orang Asli, further supporting the fact this carving was cleared for high end exhibition. The 99 is significant also. It signals that this carving was documented very early in the collection or exhibition registration cycle by Anthony Ratos. Entirely carved from Nyireh Batu wood. Carvings by Pion Anak Bumbong featuring the Anthony Ratos designation mark are considered national heritage treasures in Malaysia. The carving is 20" tall, The base measures 6" x 9"
