Rockey was one of the Marine Corps’ most respected senior commanders of World War II, best known for leading the 5th Marine Division during the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the most iconic and hard‑fought engagements in Marine Corps history.
Keller Emrick Rockey was a career Marine officer whose service spanned both World Wars. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he rose through the ranks during the interwar period, serving in Haiti, Nicaragua, China, and various stateside commands. During World War II, Rockey became best known for commanding the 5th Marine Division, leading it through the brutal fighting on Iwo Jima in 1945. After the war, he served as Commanding General of Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, one of the highest operational posts in the Corps. He retired as a Lieutenant General, remembered as a disciplined, steady combat leader and one of the senior architects of Marine operations in the Pacific.
