Lockheed P-38 Lightning Serial Number Production Tag Collectible Artifact For Sale

By way of a background, "During World War II, Cold Bay, Alaska served as a vital strategic staging ground for the Eleventh Air Force during the Aleutian Islands Campaign". This activity reached its high point in 1943. The major USAAC aircraft moving through the Cold Bay, Alaska facility during the 1942 - 1943 timeframe was the twin-engine, P-38 Lighting.During operations out of Cold Bay, Alaska most aircraft that crashed and were written off were due to training or weather-related accidents as opposed to combat with Imperial Japanese Army or Naval aircraft.The artifact we have listed for sale was from a P-38 Lightning manufactured at Lockheed's Burbank, California facility in 1941. Given the 1810-22-1 serial number and the assembly number of 225179-L we know it came from the left side of the aircraft and was most likely affixed to one of the following; 1) Main landing gear door; 2) Inner-wing flap assembly or 3) Twin boom structural junction.We also know that P-38 Lighting aircraft that had been written off with excessive damage were buried on ground near the Cold Bay, Alaska Airfield.Years later these wrecks were excavated and parts including the above tag were removed for future restoration work. Since this tag came from an early production P-38 Lightning it is rare and highly sought after.This is your chance to own a piece of USAAC WWII history.
