Each handwritten word was carefully removed from a legal document handwritten by Jay.Importantly,Jay was the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court appointed by President George Washington, serving from 1789-1795. Prior to the Court, he was president of the Continental Congress (1778-1779), was a signatory on the Treaty of Paris, and is considered one of America’s Founding Fathers.
Each encapsulated word was individually removed from a 1770 Indenture written by Jay for the purchase of a house by Dr. John Charlton. Dr. Charlton was an British-born New York physician, and the Jay family doctor. Today, Charlton Street in New York City is named after the colonial doctor who served as President of the New York Medical Society.
