A powerful and authentic Native American soapstone carving by the well-known Mohawk artist John Elliott (Turtle Clan), member of the Medicine Mask Society. The sculpture depicts a stylized face / medicine mask with strong, expressive features – deep-set eyes, prominent nose and flowing contours typical of Iroquois False Face / Medicine Mask traditions.
John Elliott began carving in 1967 and is recognized for his detailed soapstone works that blend traditional Iroquois spiritual imagery with modern sculptural form. This piece is clearly signed and dated on the base: “John Elliott 88”.
