Exceptional WWII aviation association copy of Flying Tigers’ 22nd Bomb Squadron 1942-1945:An Analysis of Management and Leadership Practices by Dr. Jack Lund Schofield.This hardbound University of Nevada, Las Vegas doctoral dissertation is especially significant becauseSchofield was himself a WWII B-25H Mitchell bomber pilot with the22nd Bomb Squadron, 341st Bomb Group, 14th Air Force in theChina-Burma-India Theater.
Schofield’s study was based in part upon his own wartime experiences with the 22nd Bomb Squadron,making this much more than a later historical account. He personally experienced the unit and subsequentlyused its wartime leadership, administration, and operations as the basis for this doctoral research.
About Jack Lund Schofield
Jack Lund Schofield served during World War II as a B-25H Mitchell bomber pilot with the22nd Bomb Squadron, 341st Bomb Group, 14th Air Force and flew44 combat missions.
After the war, Schofield built a long career in education and public service. His career included servicein the Nevada Assembly and Nevada State Senate, as well as continued work in education and public affairs.He later earned his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1995.
His dissertation, Flying Tigers’ 22nd Bomb Squadron 1942-1945:An Analysis of Management and Leadership Practices, is particularly unusual because Schofieldused his own wartime experience with the 22nd Bomb Squadron as part of his examination of leadership,administration, and the squadron's World War II history.
Personal Inscription to Betty Moss
This copy contains what appears to be an original blue-ink inscription by Jack Schofield datedDecember 3, 1995 and addressed to Betty Moss.In the inscription, Schofield writes that he hopes she enjoys reading the work as much as he enjoyedwriting it, invites her to visit Las Vegas, and signs the inscription Jack Schofield.
22nd Bomb Squadron Association Connection
A second presentation page references the22nd Bomb Squadron Association Reunion held September 21-24, 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts.The page thanks Betty Moss for ordering a copy of the document and discusses the historical importanceof the 22nd Bomb Squadron and Schofield's research.
Based on examination of the page, the main handwritten-style presentation text appears to have beenreproduced as part of a form or presentation sheet that Schofield used for copies of his dissertation.Betty Moss's name is added separately in blue ink, and a large blue-inkinitial/signature mark near the bottom also appears to have been added individually.
Also found loose inside the book is an identification/name card bearing the Flying Tiger / 14th Air Forceemblem and the wording:

The card was found with the book and will remain with it as part of its provenance.
Research Into the Betty Moss Connection
Research into surviving 22nd Bomb Squadron Association material established that the organization includedseveral types of members. Regular members were WWII 22nd Bomb Squadron veterans; affiliate members wereveterans of other units; and associate members could include family members, friends, or others with a genuineinterest in the association. The organization also sent a quarterly newsletter to hundreds of families andheld annual reunions.
Because of those membership categories, the Betty Moss identification card confirms an association with the22nd Bomb Squadron / 341st Bomb Group community, but it does not by itself establishwhether she was a veteran's wife, widow, family member, friend, or another type of association member.
Research also identified a S/Sgt. Donald A. Moss on a surviving 22nd Bomb Squadronpersonnel roster, listed as a radio operator-gunner. A relationship between Betty Moss and Donald A. Mosswould be historically interesting, but no documentation has been located that proves such a connection.This possibility is therefore presented only as an avenue for additional collector research and isnot represented as established provenance.
The surviving 22nd Bomb Squadron Association website also confirmed that the organization published aquarterly newsletter, maintained a membership of veterans and families, and organized annual reunions.No surviving online roster has yet been located that conclusively identifies Betty Moss.

Very good pre-owned condition overall. The black hardcover binding is solid with light shelf and storage wearand minor surface marks consistent with age. Pages appear clean and well preserved overall. The originalblue-ink inscription remains clear.
