This is a nice representative of an Griswold Slant Erie #7 skillet made between 1906-1916. These skillets with the slant log (non- EPU) are known as some of the finest made skillets according to the Boonie Hicks website. Although it shows its 110+ year age a bit this skillet is in pretty nice shape and is very collectable and definitely usable. If you are not familiar with Griswold cast iron cookware there is lots of info about it online and it is considered by many to be the finest cast iron cookware ever made. ** I personally like the Boonie Hicks website where you can learn a lot about the history of Griswold cast iron.
I don't believe less is more when describing a skillet and I want you to be happy with your purchase so here is what I would now want to know if I were thinking about buying this cool old skillet.
- No cracks or repairs to be found.
- The markings on the bottom of the skillet and the 7 on the top are in great shape, very pronounced.
- Rust? There is no rust on this skillet but there is an area I believe is a remnant of some light surface rust near the logo and can be seen in the photos. It appears as a slight discoloration in the metal and I cannot feel any difference between this and the surrounding area. The discoloring will easily disappear once it gets some use and builds up a bit more seasoning (I rub a very thin layer of oil on the bottom of the skillet on a regular basis after use although not every time. Remember, this skillet is newly restored and although ready to use has relatively little seasoning on it.
- There are a few minor casting imperfections and you almost always expect some casting irregularities like this on these old skillets, knowing how they were made.
- There is an average amount of utensil marks from the 110+ years worth of use but when I run my fingers over the cooking surface I hardly can feel them, it's actually pretty smooth, and again, any additional seasoning they will disappear all together.
- This skillet lays pretty near flat with a very minor tic of movement. I could not slide an average business card under the heat ring. Many would say this skillet lays flat.
- The cooking surface is nice and flat as seen in the photos with the straight edges
- You can see some minor color variations in the metal but for an old skillet this is very minimal too. Once you build up just a bit more seasoning this won't be noticeable anymore.
- Heat ring is in great condition with no noticeable uneven wear.
- After cleaning this down to bare metal I gave it four coats of seasoning. It is a dark chestnut brown and with more seasoning and/or use it will turn black. I use avocado oil for seasoning.
