The millionaire oil tycoon and two well-known actors are among the signers of this guest roster from the famed Shamrock Hotel in Houston, signed the year it opened in extravagant style
Signatures: "Glenn H. H. McCarthy", "Robert Paige", "Bruce Cabot" and 16 other guests, one of whom has added a note: "God bless Hildegarde", 2 pages (front and verso), 9x13. Captioned at top edge (unknown hand): "Shamrock Hotel/Houston - Texas June 23 -/1949". Typed captions to right of notable signatures. There are additional unidentified signatures on verso, with some French tributes to Hildegarde. GLENN McCARTHY (1907-1988) was a rags to riches oil tycoon, called "King of the Wildcatters" and "Diamond Jim." In 1949 McCarthy spent the then enormous sum of $21 million to build the Shamrock Hotel, a lavish - some said garish- facility on the outskirts of Houston. On St Patrick's Day, 1949, McCarthy held a spectacular Grand Opening, spending $1 million and flying in celebrity guests on an airliner purchased from Howard Hughes. The Emerald Room, the Shamrock's nightclub, featured celebrated entertainers and a weekly radio broadcast, Saturday at the Shamrock. This roster probably comes from a performance there by famed chanteuse Hildegarde Sell (1906-2005), who often gathered signatures from her performances. Despite the national attention it earned, the Shamrock was not a financial success. McCarthy - in temporary financial trouble - was forced to sell it to the Hilton Hotels in 1955. (An undaunted McCarthy went on to become President of Eastern Airlines, and to own enterprises ranging from a bourbon whiskey brand to a movie production company. McCarthy was the model for Jeff Rink in Edna Ferber's novel Giant (1952), and was played by James Dean in the 1956 film version. The Shamrock was donated to the Texas Medical Center and demolished, over the protests of historic preservationists, in 1988. BRUCE CABOT (1904-1972) may be best remembered as Jack Driscoll in King Kong (1933). For most of his career, Cabot was cast as a bad guy: a Huron warrior chief in Last of the Mohicans and the leader of a lynch mob in Fury (1936). After service with the US Army Air Corps in World War II, where he was rumored to be involved in diamond smuggling, Cabot returned to Hollywood, becoming a close friend of John Wayne's and appearing in many of the Duke's films (Hatari, In Harm's Way, The Green Berets, Chisum and many others). Cabot's last film appearance was in the Bond film Diamond's Are Forever (1971), as a casino owner in league with SPECTRE. ROBERT PAIGE (1911-1987), a West Point graduate, appeared in 65 films. He could sing as well as act, becoming the only actor to perform a duet with Deanna Durbin (in Can't Help Singing, 1944). After a film debut in 1934, he played mostly secondary roles until moving to Universal Pictures in 1941 and promoted to stardom in comedies (Hellzapoppin') and musicals). As host of TV's Colgate Comedy Hour in 1955, he won an Emmy. In the 1960s, Paige was a Los Angeles newscaster and ABC correspondent. He moved into public relations in the 1970s. Given the opulence of the Shamrock in its early years, the other names on this register might merit further research. In particular, the Count Jacques de Rety de Martel on verso is intriguing, but no information is available to date. Horizontal mailing fold through center. Toned around edges. Multiple signatures bleeding and smudged but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
