Bergin became Princeton’s quarterback, playing from 1907 through 1909. After graduating, he served as head football coach at Bowdoin College from 1910–1912 and at Middlebury College in 1913. His coaching record was 12–14–3, including a Maine championship in 1910. He later became a prominent college-football referee.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1906, Princeton University in 1910, and Columbia Law School in 1913. Princeton’s quarterback from 1907–1909, he became head football coach at Bowdoin College from 1910–1912, winning the 1910 Maine championship, and coached Middlebury College in 1913 before later serving as a college football referee. His legal and political career included service as a Connecticut state senator, U.S. Attorney for Connecticut from 1933–1934 during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency, New Haven City Court judge, and chairman of the Connecticut Liquor Control Commission. He died on November 11, 1971, aged 85, leaving a legacy connecting Exeter and Princeton athletics with decades of Connecticut public service.
