The colophon states a printing of only 1,000 copies, accompanied by the wonderfully DIY instruction: “When you get tired of this book, please give it to someone else.” Although a space was provided for individual copy numbering, this example was left unnumbered.
This is an early work by Mickey Hess, preceding his better-known Big Wheel at the Cracker Factory. Contemporary biographical material confirms El Cumpleaños de Paco as a 2000 publication, and Hess subsequently became an author and scholar particularly associated with hip-hop studies and alternative literature.
The book is a substantial staple-bound DIY novel rather than a short pamphlet, mixing fiction with photographs, cartoons, advertisements and artifacts of the late-1990s/2000 underground scene.
