Its A Small World History
In the magical world of Disney, a charming attraction calledChildren of the Worldwas born at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, created by WED Enterprises. It journeyed to the 1964 New York World's Fair, where it found its home at the UNICEF Pavilion, sponsored by Pepsi. At the entrance stood the dazzlingTower of the Four Winds, a 120-foot spinning sculpture designed by Rolly Crump, adding a swirl of whimsy to the fair.
This ride was one of four Disney creations at the fair, alongsideMagic Skyway,Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, andThe Carousel of Progress. After the fair ended in 1966, they all packed up to be reimagined at Disneyland.
The enchanting design was brought to life by the talented Mary Blair, whose use of vibrant colors and joyful style made every scene pop. Animator Marc Davis crafted the delightful characters and choreographed their dances, while his wife, Alice Davis, designed the dolls' costumes, drawing inspiration from fashion around the world. Walt Disney himself encouraged Alice to make the outfits so irresistible that every woman would want one!
Rolly Crump added his touch with adorable toys and figures, and the animated dolls were sculpted by Blaine Gibson. Meanwhile, Arrow Development worked their magic on the boats and the ride’s propulsion system, helping bring this whimsical world to life at Disneyland.
And so, with a swirl of colors, music, and movement,It’s a Small Worldsailed into the hearts of all who visited, a timeless celebration of global unity and joy.
The iconic music of its a small World
The attractionChildren of the Worldbegan with a different name and a grand idea: a song for every nation’s anthem, all played together. But oh dear, it was a musical muddle! Walt Disney, ever the visionary, asked the Sherman Brothers for one song that could be sung by all, in every language. Inspired by the spirit of unity after the Cuban Missile Crisis, the brothers crafted"It's a Small World (After All)"—a cheerful tune of peace and friendship that Walt loved so much, he renamed the attraction after the song.
First performed as a slow ballad, Walt requested a livelier version, and the brothers happily sped it up, adding their famous cheerful counterpoint. The song became an instant hit, and though the Shermans hoped to donate the proceeds to UNICEF, Walt knew it would become a global sensation. By 1967, it was said that visitors couldn't leave the attraction without humming it, and it became the most performed and translated song in the world.
With nearly 50 million plays at Disney Parks alone,It’s a Small Worldhas surpassed even timeless classics like "Yesterday." A third verse was added for the 45th anniversary but never made it to the ride itself. In 2022, the original version was preserved in the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance, and in 2024, a new verse composed by Richard Sherman premiered, keeping the song's magic alive for generations to come.
And so, from a simple melody,It’s a Small Worldbecame a song of joy, unity, and the enduring spirit of togetherness.
