DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) was one of the dominant figures in early nineteenth-century New York politics. He served multiple terms as mayor of New York City and later as governor of New York, becoming particularly celebrated for his advocacy of the Erie Canal, whose completion in 1825 transformed trade between the Atlantic seaboard and the American interior. This document dates from Clinton\'s third period as mayor, 1811-1815, a tenure confirmed by the New York City Municipal Archives.The check\'s Board of Health purpose gives it particular historical importance. New York City\'s Board of Health had been established in 1805 amid recurring yellow fever epidemics, with Mayor DeWitt Clinton himself playing a leading role in the city\'s early public-health response. The Board evacuated affected neighborhoods, dealt with quarantine and disease-control measures, and gathered mortality information. The present $350 payment therefore connects Clinton directly with a municipal institution closely associated with his mayoralty and with the development of organized public health in New York City.Its August 1, 1814 date adds another compelling dimension. The document was issued during the War of 1812 at a moment of mounting anxiety over British attack. During the summer of 1814, British forces intensified operations against the United States, and fear of an assault on New York reached a peak. New York City records identify Clinton as a leader of the city\'s Committee of Defense during this period.
