These tabletop medals are dedicated to the construction of Slavutych, a satellite town of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which replaced the city of Pripyat. This town is home to people who worked at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant; many of them are involved in the cleanup efforts. Construction workers from eight Soviet republics participated in the town's construction: Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
Slavutych got its name from the Old Slavonic name for the Dnieper River. This is reflected on the town's coat of arms in the form of a symbolic image of the river.
