Original circa 1860s sixth-plate tintype depicting three unidentified men posed in a studio setting. The two seated men wear wide-brimmed hats and fringed outer garments and are each visibly holding a pistol. A third man stands behind them. The painted mountainous backdrop and clothing give the portrait a particularly strong Western or frontier appearance.
Housed in a period molded thermoplastic Union case with patriotic American eagle design, ornate gilt brass mat and preserver, embossed velvet facing pad, and original-style brass clasp. The case, image, and hardware are all period compatible and appear to have been together for many years, although no original provenance accompanies the photograph. The case should not be interpreted as proof that the subjects were Union soldiers. They could have just been cowboys, ranch hands, gun slingers or maybe even outlaws! :)
The tintype has scattered surface scratches, spotting, abrasions, and other age-related wear as shown. Case has exterior rubbing and expected wear from age but remains intact and displays very well. An unusually striking early group portrait with two prominently displayed handguns.
