The first of the Cerebus collected editions, known to readers as the\"phonebooks.\" This volume gathers the early issues of Dave Sim\'sself-published series, roughly 500 pages of black and white comics.
ABOUT THE WORK:
Cerebus began in December 1977 as the first title from Aardvark-Vanaheim, launched by Dave Sim and his partner Deni Loubert. It startedas a parody of Conan the Barbarian by way of Howard the Duck, with abad-tempered aardvark mercenary in a world of humans, and grew overtime into something far stranger and more ambitious.
Sim wrote and drew all 300 issues, concluding the series in 2004 exactlywhere he had said he would decades earlier - an almost unheard-of featof sustained self-publication. Gerhard joined as background artistbeginning with later volumes.
Volume 1 covers Cerebus\'s early mercenary adventures and introducescharacters who run through the rest of the series, including Elrod theAlbino, Red Sophia, Jaka, and Lord Julius.
Cerebus is widely credited with helping launch the independent comicsmovement of the 1980s, and remains one of the landmark works ofself-published comics.
