The 57th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, beginning October 1861 and mustered in December 14, 1861, for a three-year enlistment under the command of Colonel William Maxwell. In the Battle of Gettysburg, the regiment was commanded by Colonel Sides, who was wounded in the left hand on the 2nd. Captain Alanson H. Nelson then took command.
