An antique late 19th to early 20th-century German stoneware beer stein. Tall handled vessel with a hinged pewter lid. The hand-painted relief body is decorated in Neo Renaissance style. Panels with biblical multi-figure scenes and mythological characters are encompassed with grotesque ornaments. Inscription in German on the base is a quote from Proverbs 24:5, "Ein weiser Mann ist stark und ein vernuenftiger Mann ist maechtig von Kraeften"---"A strong man knows how to use his strength, but a person with knowledge is even more powerful.
