Beautiful antique Mohawk / Haudenosaunee Iroquois raised-beadwork pincushion or “whimsy,” dating approximately to the late 19th or early 20th century.
The piece features a rich purple velvet center with an elaborate raised glass-bead bird surrounded by flowers, leaves and decorative motifs. Clear/cream glass seed beads dominate the design, accented by unusual and very attractive blue beads along with green, coral-orange, yellow and gray tubular beads.
This type of highly decorative beadwork was traditionally produced by Haudenosaunee artists, including Mohawk makers, for the souvenir and tourist trade in areas such as New York, Niagara Falls and Kahnawake, Quebec.
