Antique Hall’s Excelsior Mechanical Bank – J. & E. Stevens – Cast IronAntique cast-iron Hall’s Excelsior mechanical bank, a well-known early American mechanical bank design associated with John D. Hall and manufactured by J. & E. Stevens Co. of Cromwell, Connecticut.The Hall’s Excelsior design dates to the late 19th century and was originally patented in 1869. This example does not have a visible patent date and is being offered as a later 19th-century example.The bank retains attractive old cream, red and black painted decoration with “HALL’S EXCELSIOR BANK” across the front. Architectural details include pierced lattice windows, front steps, perforated rear panel and the distinctive roof and cupola.IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTE: This bank is incomplete. The original internal mechanical components/cashier figure are missing and the bank is not operational as a mechanical bank. It is being sold as an antique display piece, collector’s example, or restoration project.Paint shows age-appropriate wear, losses, oxidation, surface marks and patina. No attempt has been made to clean, repaint or restore the bank. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description.A small loose metal piece was found inside the bank and will be included with the purchase.
