Antique Cambridge Art Tile Works architectural tile featuring a beautiful mottled tortoiseshell glaze in warm caramel brown and creamy ivory tones with extensive age-related crazing throughout the glossy surface. The reverse bears the distinctive script-style “Cambridge” impressed mark associated with the Cambridge Art Tile Works, founded in 1887 in Covington, Kentucky and later known as the Cambridge Tile Manufacturing Company. The wonderfully irregular flowing glaze gives the tile an almost abstract appearance and makes it an excellent example of late 19th to early 20th century American decorative architectural ceramics. Shows expected antique wear including crazing, edge wear and small chips as photographed. Measures approximately 6 x 6 inches.
