Original late-19th-century J. & E. Stevens "Mule Entering Barn" cast iron mechanical bank, designed by Edward L. Morris and associated with the August 3, 1880 patent.

A classic American cast-iron mechanical bank retaining substantial original painted surface, its operating mechanism and period patent-marked circular coin trap.

Mechanical Action

Place a coin between the mule's rear legs and press the operating lever near the mule's front feet.

When triggered:

• the mule kicks upward and propels the coin into the barn;
• the small dog simultaneously emerges from beneath the barn doorway.

The mechanism has been tested and functions properly with strong spring action. See video for operation.

Important Underside Repair

The bank has a substantial old repair to the underside of the base.

A carefully shaped rectangular metal plate has been tightly fitted and secured over part of the original base with multiple rivets/fasteners. The work is substantial and well executed, with aged surface and oxidation.

The plate covers the area where the original August 3, 1880 patent marking is normally found on the base, so that marking is no longer visible.

The exact date and origin of this repair are unknown. It is described as an old repair only; no claim is made that it was performed by J. & E. Stevens or at the factory.

The repair is shown clearly in the underside photographs. Please review those images closely.

Condition

Very good antique display condition considering its age.

The bank retains a significant amount of its original painted finish with expected localized paint loss, surface wear, oxidation and patina.

The mechanical action functions properly. The mule kicks and the dog emerges as intended.

The circular patent-marked coin trap is present and operates normally.

As described above, the underside has a substantial old riveted metal-plate repair. No other significant structural repairs have been identified.
