ThisAtwaterKent Model 80is an iconic "cathedral-style" tabletop tube radio introduced in the summer of 1931 andManufactured by the AtwaterKent Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is highly prized by vintage electronicsenthusiasts for its premium craftsmanship and gorgeous Gothic aesthetic. This unit includes the original wood cabinet and complete radio chassis and speaker with the original cord and three knobs. This unit powers on but does not tune in stations (see video). The cabinet is in good original condition however there is a top wood capital missing from the left pilaster side (see photos).
·Cabinet Artistry:Designed by famed industrial designer Charles S. Bradley, the Model 80 featuresa striking Gothic-style rounded arch and premium cabinet fascia with a “fullvision dial” and incorporating multiple wood types including a semicirculardistinctive Zebrawood trim panel paired with panels of “matched butt walnut” and and ornamental grille sided by “rope carved/barleytwist” pilasters on each side.
·Circuitry:It utilizes a 6-tube superheterodyne receiver designed strictly for AMband broadcast listening.
· Technical Details:The intermediate frequency (IF) operates at 130 KHz. The rear of thechassis includes an antenna trimmer knob to optimize reception. The Loudspeaker is an Electro MagneticDynamic LS with a moving-coil with field excitation coil.
·Innovation:The Model 80 was among the early wave of superheterodyne receivers to featurean advanced automatic volume control (AVC) system to reduce signalfading.
