Pipes and tobaccos magazine, affectionately known as P&T by many, was the longest-running pipe-focused periodical ever, its existence spanning more than two decades between 1996 and 2019. A massively influential publication whose success was unprecedented, Pipes and tobaccos was founded by Dayton Matlick and covered a variety of topics in the pipe sphere, including widely known artisans, small-scale carvers, and full-on factories. The scope of their coverage and consistently excellent photography led to success and acclaim, though Matlick often operated at a loss, making it a true passion project. Among its litany of services to the pipe world, Pipes and tobaccos also produced a long line of pipes of the year, collaborating with a variety of artisans and craftsmen to create unique and stylish smokers that include this Ardor Venere Silver Spigot Cutty from the 2001 edition and numbered 143. - SP website

Pipes and Tobacco Magazine was an institution in the pipe world only closing down do the the massive changes of print media due to the internet.

This is a great pipe for smoking and collecting on a few levels. Ardor is of course a top level Italian pipe brand and I can say based on regular hunting for them, they’re highly in demand and more competitive than many of their analogues.

Second is this is a limited release, special design made as their Pipe of the Year for 2001. Ardor only did a pipe of the year for Pipes and Tobacco Magazine one time, here in 2001.

Third, it’s always nice finding an unsmoked pipe with age to it. I believe briar continues to get better with age after cut just as it does before being shapes so this 25 years has to help.

This is the first Cutty I’ve had with a foot actually. I avoided some in the past thinking the foot was just aesthetic holdover from the clay pipe days it resembled. However, while taking the photos for this pipe, I was surprised how well it worked as a sitter for the pipe. It is quite stable for a small footprint. This past month, I decided to smoke one of the rustic versions of this pipe and it’s become a favorite of mine even as I still break it in.

This Ardor POTY is the top-end submission with the smooth finish and Venere stamp. The briar is very high grade and shows beautiful flame grain all around the bowl and running up and forward on the shank. The flat rim shows off gorgeous bird’s-eye grain and at the heel and base of the pipe. The honey blonde stain is an excellent color for contrasting the nice grain and against the silver and black stem. (All of the nomenclature is listed above with the dimensions if you missed it.)

This Cutty sports one of the nicest spigots I’ve seen in recent memory. The shank cap and stem wrapped in sterling silver and ends with a crown like design before transitioning to the deep black that comes to the thickest part mid-way before tapering to a comfortable bit. The Blue Ardor stem insert always looks great against the stem on their pipes, in my opinion.

It’s stamped Pipes and Tobacco at the top in the font used by Pipes Magazine as well as what pipe number it is for the POTY release. This is a modernized rendition of the classic Cutty shape. These were designated Due Punti, which indicates a very high quality.

This POY series was said to increase and cement the reputation of Ardor’s work in the pipe making industry giving a lot of exposure to the company among pipe smokers.

The silver also has Pipes and Tobacco 2001 stamped into the band which was a very nice added touch. Ardor uses Sardinian briar, considered among the very best briar available today. I wasn’t able to find how many were made for this pipe of the year, but I have one from Vollmer & Nillson and some from Savinelli (different years) and the numbers were quite small from 50 and 75 pieces to a few hundred so I don’t imagine Ardor would have made too many of these.

These Pipes Magazine pipes of the year come as-is without a box or sock. It was the same for the other brands, even the $500 Vollmer Nillson one. I do package them very carefully and use smoking pipes boxes and socks that I’ve always saved to ship them in as well with labels I created.

Description from SP:

“Crafted for Pipes and tobaccos magazine by Ardor, this Cutty is a modernized rendition of the old-school shape. It retains all of the form's characteristic shaping cues, including a forward-ebbing bowl, a protruding heel spur, and a subtly bent shank-and-stem arrangement. The bowl's surging posture lends a subtle dynamism to the shape's silhouette, while the aforementioned heel spur enables the entire composition to sit sturdily without the aid of a stand.”

Radiant Pipes Info:

All pipes are very carefully packaged and I spare no expense in materials. Each package takes me 10 minutes or so to prepare. I’ve yet to have a pipe arrive damaged in all these years. They’re always sent as one piece for better climate acclimation as well.

» You get what you pay for.

My pipes are carefully inspected and attended to. I put hours into a $30 pipe or a $500 pipe with the same attention and care. Even new, old stock pipes can have factory errors, oxidized stems or micro scratches. Meticulous restorations are done as needed for each to provide the best possible pipe, that I truly hope you love. I always want to exceed the typical expectations. Please check out my reviews to see my commitment to this!

Please examine all photos provided for condition. Always review dimensions too. Not paying attention to the size is the main reason people return a pipe. Thank you! - Peter

I PURCHASE PIPES AND COLLECTIONS TOO. Contact me any time if you are looking to sell pipes. Please provide as much info as you can to save time.

AFTER YOUR PURCHASE:

I take pride in my great care for packing and shipping your item. I spend a lot more time ensuring it is safely packed and with the best materials.

Pipes are always shipped as one piece. This is far better for the pipe, particularly with climate changes during shipping.

I try to ship all pipes the next day though on very busy days or due to other circumstances, it can sometimes take 2 business days. If you purchase on a Thursday night, I may not be shipped until Monday. However, in most cases it goes out ASAP.

Gifts of appreciation are almost always included. 🙂 It’s just fun to do in this hobby. I spend a lot of time thinking of small things that are enjoyable and change them up frequently. If you ever are in need of a small item that costs too much in shipping to order from a store, feel free to ask me. I may have it and will include for free. (Pipe cleaners, bite guards, filters, adapters, stands, etc. etc. (I hate needing a $2-3 item and it costs $9 to ship it so I always buy extra from those stores myself, for you guys.)

ABOUT RADIANT PIPES VINTAGE RESTORATIONS & CURATED BRIARS INFO:

Due to a broken back and other injuries and raising a special needs child, I had to be home 24/7. I took up restoration and pipe making as a hobby around 2019 to feel accomplishment and help fund some activities for my son too. This quickly turned into a full obsession and I’ve spent every day since working on, researching, making and smoking pipes. I’m as much of an avid enthusiast as the best of them with serious PAD & TAD.

My margins are often very narrow for the amount of work put, the cost of the item, seller fees etc. I barely break even annually doing this. It’s certainly not very profitable but it brings me a lot of joy and fulfillment. I don’t offer discounts but I do make it a better deal for repeat customers etc whom I truly appreciate and couldn’t do this without. Customers and then friends! As said before, I always include gifts for fun and the gifts do get nicer and nicer for repeat purchases as I want to outdo my last one and show appreciation too.

I do this professionally, full time. When it says Restored, it is truly restored. Not just cleaned up. It’s not something I’ve done 40 pipes or so with. I’ve invested a huge amount of money for tools and supplies as well as the hard work. I have spent almost single every day for years working on pipes and making them. My goal is that you get above and beyond what you expect.

*I COMBINE SHIPPING. If buying multiple items, add to your cart and it will discount shipping.

Shipping to other countries (only certain sites apply):

I reserve the right to decide if it’s worth the risk to ship outside the United States. It depends on factors like Age of Account, response, Known Risk of Country and Value of Item.

POLICIES & MORE INFO:

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: - CANADA + Elsewhere:

PIPES OVER $400 WILL NOT BE SHIPPED INTERNATIONALLY UNLESS WE HAVE HISTORY OR YOU ARE VERIFIABLE and if applicable, must have established response. There may be additional costs for insurance overseas though I usually absorb any extra cost. (Shipping services will not cover more than $400 and shipping costs triple usually over that)

~SHIPPING TIMES / LATE DELIVERY USPS:

I don’t own the United States Postal Service. Once I’ve shipped your package, I have NO control on delays or knowing where a package is any more than you do with the tracking number. Sometimes USPS tracking doesn’t work but the pipe always shows up. It’s rare but happens so don’t worry if it doesn’t update. That’s just USPS. I package everything with great care and have never had an item arrive damaged.

RETURNS:

If you’re not 100% happy, please let me know before filing any dispute or response. I’ll do everything I can to resolve the situation.

Returns must be in the exact same condition as sent to you. If they’re smoked or damaged, I cannot accept a return so please make sure it’s exactly

what you want prior to smoking it.

If you have questions, feel free to contact me. A quick search and you can find me all over.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Peter - Radiant Pipes
